If you are having problems with the water going down the drain when you flush the toilet, you want to make sure that you get that fixed as soon as possible. There are some things that you can do on your own before reaching out to a residential plumbing service to get your toilet running well again.

Plunge it

One thing that you can try is plunging it. When you use a plunger, you are using pressure to break up any clog or blockage in the pipe so that it will move on down the pipes. You want to make sure that you get a plunger that is designed especially for the toilet. They are generally made out of black rubber and will have a smaller cup that comes out from the larger plunger. That little cup is designed to go into the drain part of the toilet. That will help keep the pressure going down through the drains and into the pipes to break up any blockage. If you have just bought a new plunger, you might want to put a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the sides of the cup to help with your plunging work. 

Get it Soapy

Another thing that you can try is some liquid soap and water. You can use body wash, shampoo, conditioner, or dishwashing soap. You could even try using some laundry detergent. The important thing is that it is liquid soap. The reason that it needs to be liquid soap of some kind is that the soaps contain slippery things called surfactants. The surfactants help to reduce the surface tension of a liquid when they are mixed together. That's what makes soap slippery when it's on your hand. When you pour soap down the drain, it will slowly sink down into the water to the blockage or clog because it is heavier than water. The soap will continue to make the clog slippery and if there is grease and such, it can help break it down. After the soap has been sitting in the pipes for a little while, pour some very hot water down into the pipes. The hot water will help to move everything along. Then you can try flushing to see if it worked.
